Our Declaration

null

WE, the people, hold the following to be true:

  1. Mental health is the state of holistic wellbeing.
  2. Mental health is at the core of what it means to be human.
  3. Mental health is the absence of mental illness.

To this extent, “ME, I AM MENTAL.” Proudly.

As you should be. As should your sister, brother, mother, father, friend, colleague, neighbour…

Let us unpack this.

It is good science that what we think and feel affects our bodies. And what we do to or with our bodies, affects what we feel and think. This cyclical play of factors and forces is what makes you yourself.

On closer look, we will notice that the mind does not sit separately or remotely in a special chamber somewhere in our body, but is distributed throughout the body through a complex, powerful, wonderful network of consciousness using the nervous and endocrine systems.

In other words, the mind is alive in each of our body’s cells. Every thought and feeling takes place at the cellular level. To understand the body, you understand the mind. To understand the mind, you understand the body. To understand both is to understand life.

There is growing global interest in mental health. This could be because we are generally becoming more aware of our mental health; and/or because we are feeling increasingly desperate regarding our mental health.

It is well known that the number of reported cases of mental illness has risen sharply in the recent past. Economic and political stresses, technology, social and cultural unrest etc. are some of the factors giving rise to this situation, which if not checked, will result in dire consequences for all of us, individually and collectively.

ME I AM MENTAL

is both a restatement of the most fundamental aspect of our identity as human beings, as well as a call to arms to all those willing join the legions of the brave men and women who have dared to see the mental health situation for what it is and have set out to do something about it. Through this project we will:

  1. Share our stories
  2. Educate each other on all aspects of the mind, body and spirit
  3. Assist each other with healing/managing our brokenness.
  4. Refocus our attention on the things that give our lives meaning and fulfilment
  5. Create a positive social butterfly effect

How do we do this?
